I have driven past Archie's countless times over the past decades (going back to when it was Golden Rule), but I finally got to eat there for the first time! You walk in and the aroma of smoking meat surrounds you. The open kitchen with the BBQ pit in the back is surrounded by booths and tables, creating a warm and casual setting that is perfect for a family meal. The staff were universally friendly, not just our waitress but all the other servers and kitchen staff. They greeted us all with smiles and interacted kindly with my baby and toddler. The food was hearty and homey, with generous portions. We enjoyed a burger, pulled pork sandwiches, a corn dog, fries, baked beans, and a fried peach pie with vanilla ice cream. The burger was cooked fresh and perfectly grilled. The pulled pork was smoky and tender, but the sauce was a little more vinegary than I prefer. The fries were perfectly crisp and golden. My kiddo gave a huge thumbs up for his corn dog and the beans were a hit with the baby. The peach pie tasted like something my grandma would have made, warm and sweet and comforting. And if you like sweet tea so sweet you get cavities just looking at it, Archie's is the place for you (I had to do half and half myself).Posted on Yelp

Marcia W.92 days agoTook a friend there for lunch who had never been, ordered hamburgers and split an order of fries (always enough to share). Food arrived very quickly and was hot. Good quick 'grab lunch' kind of place. Nothing fancy about it, the wait staff is friendly, efficient, prices are reasonable, and quantities are sufficient. Have not tried the bbq but several people there had ordered what looked like pulled pork and everyone seemed happy to be there.Posted on Google

The menu isn't overly large or overwhelming, but has all the staples such as barbecue, burgers, and fries. The sweet tea is proper southern style, and the waitresses are just as sweet. We got a jumbo burger w/cheese and bacon and and a jumbo pork sandwich with fries. As always, it did not disappoint. I had the hamburger steak with gravy and onions. It was really good. I ordered the small portion. It was plenty for me. It comes with two sides. They only have four options (slaw, baked beans, fries and potato chips. I try to eat on the healthier side so the sides don't fit with me. I got the slaw. Wish they had vegetables or a small salad. Service is great. Very friendly and attentive. Most employees have been there for a while (years). Service really makes a difference. Two customers told me to get one of their fried pies and I was tempted. But didn't order it because it doesn't fit in with my healthy eating plan. It looked good. The restaurant is a typical kind of old school bbq joint. Nothing fancy but I don't need that from a good bbq place. Smells great in there. Pennie N.354 days agoFood was delicious...we had outside sliced bbq plates bith with fries snd the hubby had slaw and I had the bbq beans and our plates came with bbq bread. Karen was our server who'd been working there 15 years and she was great. Current owner is the same since the 70's and its been in business since the 50's. The 1/2 Lb burger looked and smelled amazing and next time we will get it to share. They do make those fresh hand pattied as well. They have BLT's, Turkey and grilled cheese sandwiches as well as hamburger steak with onions and gravy, chicken tenders and they also have hot dogs and chili during cool weather. If you don't get a fried pie, you're doing yourself a disservice... they are awesome!!! Update 10/01/25... I was in Birmingham again and, yes, I stopped at Archie's for lunch. I tried the barbecue pork sandwich instead of my usual burger. It was just as good as I expected... the pork had a good smoked flavor, tender and tasty. Their house sauce is good and compliments the flavor of the pork. The coleslaw slaw... top notch. I'm usually a mayonnaise based coleslaw slaw fan but this was different but good! A good balance of vinegar and sugar that works great with the cabbage. I don't see me not stopping here when I'm in the area!!!Posted on Google

The atmosphere has that old-school charm that instantly makes you feel at home, and we were greeted right away by some of the friendliest staff you could ask for. We came in for one of their famous burgers and decided on the jumbo burger, which we split along with an order of fries. Let me just say, that was more than enough food — I left completely full and satisfied. The burger was packed with flavor, the fries were spot-on, and the whole meal reminded me why this place has such a great reputation. Since eating there, I’ve told several people about Archie’s and how good the food is. I honestly cannot wait to go back. Joe L.464 days agoWhen I am in the mood for the best BBQ Butt in town, I go to Archie's Bar-B-Q off HWY31 in Hoover. Coming in the backside from Lorna Road is the best route in traffic. Unfortunately Archie's not convenient for me, so I don't get to Archie's nearly enough. But I know where to go when it counts! I purchased 4lbs of inside and outside mixed meat today, and a quart of sauce with extra pickles. Everyone eating all said the same thing. Delicious ! The ole fashioned home-made fried Apple and Peach pies remind of my grandmother's, she used to make these fried pies for the "Real" Original Golden Rule in Irondale when it was across the street, from the current Irondale locations many years ago. The beans and coleslaw are also excellent. I think Archie's may have some of these vintage photos inside if my memory serves. I grew up with my grandad standing me on the kitchen table as a toddler while he made up the original Golden Rule BBQ Sauce in gaint pickle jars. The jars was bigger than I was. I still have this original Golden Rule sauce recipe that Archie's uses. They do an excellent job! Nothing has changed at this location but the name. Still the best BBQ in town. The complete package. The servers always do a great job, those that take and fetch to go orders from the parking lot are really efficient. The only constructive advice I would give is this owner, is to Keep Up The Work ! And get setup for delivery! So how some way! Somehow being able to pay online so pick ups can be made by others for delivery. Double your business!+0Posted on Google

Tiffani Peer506 days agoThis was my first time here and it was good I’m not a fan of the sauce but since I’ve been in Alabama I haven’t been a fan of anybody sauces Texas barbecue is just a little different than Alabama barbecue this place by far is good macaroni and cheese with excellent baked beans were good if I could give one critique it would be the pulled pork doesn’t need to be swimming in the sauce maybe ask the guest if they want sauce on it or not cause it was too vinegar for me but I will definitely be back.. you can’t beat the price me and my husband ate here for 30 bucks and it’s a really good vibe in here a large plate with five bones and two sides for $15 can’t beat it the only thing that rubbed me wrong is I guess the manager whatever went to all the tables and talk to everybody but he did not come to mine and my husband‘s table kind of felt some type of way about it but great great place to eat .. None of them come close to Archie’s. Only thing I wish they had were ribs. But everyone wants to sell baby back ribs. I can only find beef ribs in Texas and Salinas California. I kept it simple with a hamburger and let me tell you this, as plain as it was I could not put it down. I wasn’t able to take more pictures because I was worried about the burger and crispy fries. But the food... the BBQ... just melts in your mouth! It's a bit on the spicy side but oh so good. I believe it's won awards for it BBQ. Absolutely delicious. We had been thinking HB Steak for a week. I ordered mine cooked medium. The outside was crusty and the inside perfectly medium smothered in onions and gravy. You can't go wrong. Marinated slaw was fresh, crunchy, cut nicely. The marinade had just the right sweetness and just a hint of red wine vinegar. My whole plate was pleasantly hot. The fries and grilled toast were perfect. Don't burn your mouth like I did. The menu lets you know the HB steaks take a little longer to cook since they are cooked to order. The wait was worth it!. I was way too full for a fried pie al a mode but it looked luscious! Service was good considering it was 7pm. It has a real diner feel. Nothing fancy. Go early if possible. She was so personable and friendly, and by the conversation she was having with the table next to us, you could tell she really knows her customers. She even convinced us to try the turnover and it was delicious! We were stuffed like turkeys when we left. Dawson S.873 days agoFirst time having Archie's after multiple recommendations from the surrounding Hoover area and I must say it holds up the talk! Upon entering I was almost instantly greeted by the staff. The seating is as-you-choose and so I opted to sit on the cushioned bar to see the kitchen. The cooks were very engaging and one even talked to me about the Stallion's football game earlier that day! The entire space, while small, was very nice and talkative (in a good way!). As for the food I opted for a Jumbo Pork (chopped) sandwich and my goodness it was good. The pork was delicious and the sauce was unreal. Their signature sauce is most certainly worth going for on its own. The bun of the sandwich was also warm, they keep your food under warmers so it's always warm if they are waiting on something! Only thing I had to decide on was whether or not I was going to dine in or get to go. I decided to dine in because I really wanted fresh food. I ordered the 1/4 hamburger and a side of fries. The burger isn't frozen so the wait is certainly worth it. The fries are basic. Nothing special but hot and fresh. I really enjoyed my food!!! The staff is super friendly. I walked in and they really took care of me from start to finish. I felt right at home and this was my first time coming here! I did place a to go order as well..... I wasn't gonna skip dessert because how could I turn down a fried peach pie! OMG!!!! So amazingly delicious!!!! Crispy on the outside and warm , tender peaches inside! ZERO regrets. None! I also got a regular chopped pork sandwich/ sauce on the side to eat the next day. The sandwich was decent. I would order again. These types of establishments always have that down home atmosphere feeling. It really adds to the overall experience. Go to Archie's bbq because you KNOW you want a fried pie! I was in the area and called in an order, and the lady on the phone was so kind. The place was packed but they had my order ready about 10 minutes after I placed it with extra condiments in the bag ready to go. I didn't dine inside. Looked pretty busy on the interior when I went around noon. Everything seemed pretty clean though and I was happy to find parking since there were so many customers. Overall, great experience. David L.1042 days agoFormerly Golden Rule BBQ, Archie's is located at the busy intersection of Montgomery Hwy and Braddock Dr. Across the street from Publix, not far from Salvatore's, Shipley Donuts and Hoover Tactical, Archie's is hard to miss with constant smoke emmanating from their red roof. I have visited when it was Golden Rule, but this was my first time since they changed to Archie's which was awhile ago. The interior hasn't changed much except for maybe the decorations. The "kitchen" is right in the center for all to see surrounded by a circled "bar" that you may sit. The rest of the cramped restaurant is filled with chairs and tables. I say cramped because Archie's gets busy and if you're there at a popular time, you may have to wait. We went on a weekday lunch and the staff seemed to get people seated pretty quickly. But we were never "rushed" to leave for people waiting. The atmosphere during lunch is loud and an organized chaos to say the least. But I liked the atmosphere and the noise never bothered my friends and I as we had our conversations. After being seated, our waiter promptly got our drinks and then our orders. Our food arrived quickly. Paul told me that their hamburgers were good and that's what we both ordered. Kenny got a pork plate and he enjoyed it. The burger was simple and that's what made it great. It's something I would've made myself at home. The quarter pound patty was grilled on a flat grill to a nice medium then served on a toasted bun which looked like it was lightly buttered, a slice of tomato, red onion, lettuce and a cheese. It wasn't pretty but it tasted like a delicious burger was supposed to taste. Yom Yom Yom Yom. No other condiments were added because ketchup, mustard and mayo was at your table. Instead of fries, I opted for their slaw. It was the vinegar variety and I liked it. Finished the entire tiny bowl. Service was great. She topped off my tea at least twice. I plan to return to try their BBQ. As I mentioned, Archie's wouldn't be the ideal spot for a romantic date with private conversations, but if you want some good comfort food, Archie's your place.+0Posted on Yelp
Paul C.1046 days agoMy friend and renowned Yelper Gary I. has been telling me about the burgers at Archie's for years. I stopped in today to find out for myself. I was positively impressed. It's a simple 1/4 lb patty that is cooked on a short-order grill. It is served on a traditional hamburger bun, and dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. Ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard are on the table. Much better than any fast food, national-chain burger. The fries were good. Thin and crispy. The ambiance is casual and friendly. You can tell the majority of customers are locals and repeat customers (usually a good sign). My friends and I sat at a four-top table and service was good. The wait staff was fast and efficient. It wasn’t fancy just a bun, cheese, bacon, burger pickles tomato, purple onion, etc. but it was fantastic. My wife got the pulled pork barbecue sandwich and baked beans and she loved hers, too. They have sweet an. unsweet tea and a big glass with a teaspoon. The server came to the table a dozen times asking if we were OK and filling our tea glasses. It was golden rule when we first noticed this tiny place on hwy 31 long ago and it then changed to Archie's a few years ago. We decided - let's just try it today. SSSSSSSOOOOO sorry that we thought this place would be just moderate ok BBQ.... It was WAY BETTER than that. The sliced pork was perfectly juicy and with a great bark and smoke. The server Kaitlyn was super friendly and over worked (but in the food business everyone is short staffed). She handled it like a pro and we made sure to tell the manager. This is a hole in the wall little greasy floor place but that is why we loved it. People truly looked like they loved what they do and made everyone feel like family. Melanie Perry1068 days agoOne of my faves as fast as BBQ. How about this: pull up in the parking lot and they have dedicated curb side service! You can order from your car and everything!!!! You can also dine-in but I thought that was so cool because you just don't see that anywhere anymore. The food was great, the service was superb and the fried pies are DELICIOUS!!!! Extremely busy day with a lot of Christmas shoppers. Persnickety folks next to us wanted to fuss. John Norris1093 days agoThis is as old school as it gets. While we take such places for granted in the Deep South, they can be hard to find in other sections of the country where BBQ is what we call “grilling out.” Don’t expect table cloths or fine china. Do expect waitresses who call you hon and your clothes to smell like pulled pork and other goodness when you leave. Also, be sure to get there early, because it gets crowded very quickly and some of the regulars have their “own tables.” It is kind of like sitting in someone else’s pew on Sunday. Two of us got the burger, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it was larger than advertised and had all the flavoring of being cooked on a grill which has been seasoned for decades. Nothing gourmet about it…just a good, old-fashioned American classic cooked correctly with everything you need on it. Another one of us got the pulled pork sandwich, which was a man sized meal. He is a pretty big guy, and couldn’t finish it and the fries. He proclaimed it “solid,” and it looked it. Had I not been so satisfied with my burger, I would have had “order remorse.” Am looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu. Kc1111 days agoTraveling from AZ to SC, we spent the night in Alabama and stopped here for a bite. We were very satisfied after eating here, we got there 8 min before they closed and the lady at the front was very kind and took our order. The cook is great at what they do and we wish there was one where we're moving!!Posted on Google

Shane T.1120 days agoGreat pork sandwich, chopped or sliced. Pickles, right amount of tangy sauce, a little sloppy! The cole slaw is excellent, definitely not you standard dry bland cole slaw. There's obviously a secret family recipe going there. The baked beans are very tasty too and I think they add some chopped pork to them as well!Posted on Google

Staci Kirkland1134 days agoMy aunt and I were traveling and stopped in Hoover to avoid rush hour traffic when we accidentally discovered this delightful lunch. The smell from across the street is what grabbed our attention. When we walked in, the atmosphere was very welcoming and every table was full with a diverse customer base. I especially loved the kitchen was in open view and all staff was friendly. Kaitlyn was our service and she was excellent. I was also impressed with the owners involvement in the operation of the business including greeting tables and running the cash register. That is rare these days. We tried the chopped pork sandwich, cheeseburger, fries, a sample of the sweet and sour slaw, and both Peach and apple fried pies with ice cream. Everything was served quickly and tasted delicious. The homeade suace was also very good. My favorite was the fried pies, but I am partial to desserts. I highly reccomend and wish I lived closer to eat here more often. I only have pictures of the fried pies we split to try both because the food was so delicious it was gone before I thought of pictures.+0Posted on Google

Missy Manning1172 days agoThe food was great except they have changed the french fries. They used to be hand cut fries then they changed to crinkle cut. Now they have coated fries and they are not as good as before. If you have a good thing, don’t change it go back to what you did for yearsPosted on Google

The Dude1180 days agoCrowded place at lunch. Tables are reserved for two or more, have to sit at a bar style counter if eating alone. Service is minimal, both in a good way and a bad one. Food is good slaw and BBQ sauce kinda heavy in the vinegar.Posted on Google

Amanda Spellman1204 days agoI've been coming here since I was a young girl. Formally Golden Rule BBQ. Same wonderful atmosphere, friendly people, and most of all Delicious Food. (It literally melts in your mouth). Highly recommend if you've never had Archie's. Their Jumbo Burger is killer. (You're gonna want a nap after that guy)
